What are Cholesterol Lowering Foods?
Most people now already know the important role having a low cholesterol level plays in
preventing a heart attack and other health problems. But many people don’t know what type of foods to include in their diet as a way of reducing their cholesterol
levels to the maximum recommendations - at the least.
While having a higher fiber intake is important, there are Cholesterol Lowering Foods that are not only high in fiber but that contain other substances that can help to lower your cholesterol. So, gaining an
understanding of these foods and how they can improve your cholesterol level is a healthy start to cholesterol lowering diet plan.
It seems that the first thing most people think about eating when they want to lower their cholesterol is oatmeal or cheerios (or similar breakfast foods) because these are known to be high in fiber. And this is true. Soluble fiber
appears to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in your intestines. Ten grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Adding fruit, such as bananas, to your oatmeal or high fiber cereal adds even more fiber. So, oatmeal, cheerios, and other breakfast
foods that are high in fiber are a good start.
However, fiber content alone should not be the sole determining factor of whether it constitutes a healthy choice. Some breakfast cereals may be high in fiber but also high in sugar, which tends to negate the healthy aspects of the fiber. So, what foods other than oatmeal and cereal can one incorporate into their diet to increase their fiber intake as
cholesterol lowering foods? Well, anything that is whole wheat for one. So, choosing
whole grain or whole wheat bread over white is also a good start.
Brown rice is another good choice, not only because of the high fiber content but it also has an oil that helps to lower cholesterol. Apples and other fruits are high in fiber as are leafy vegetables and beans. Nuts and seeds in moderation are also a great choice for a high fiber snack. However,
fiber content alone is not the only key to choosing cholesterol lowering foods.
Fish, because of it’s high levels of omega-3 fatty acids is known to be a cholesterol lowering food when cooked in a healthy fashion (not fried).
Cinnamon has been found to reduce cholesterol in many studies, as has
garlic. So, adding these to foods when appropriate can be a good thing.
Soy products are well known to lower LDL and raise HDL cholesterol levels too. So, lowering cholesterol can involve more than increasing your intake of high fiber foods
